How we build every score

Fixblueprint is built on transparency: this page spells out how we calculate repairability, which evidence we cite and how to interpret each band.

A single score rooted in four pillars

Our headline figure (0–10) blends four weighted pillars that describe how workable real-world repairs genuinely are—not just how nice the marketing slides look.

Weight: 30%

Openness

How easily can someone open the device without destroying it? We log fastener types (Phillips vs proprietary pentalobe), adhesive reliance, ribbon routing risk and panel fragility.

Weight: 30%

Parts

Can everyday users or independent workshops buy the parts they need? We track battery/display/camera SKU availability, price bands and fulfilment timelines across OEM and trusted third-party outlets.

Weight: 20%

Documentation

Are official repair manuals, schematics or service bulletins obtainable? Manufacturer PDFs score highly, yet peer-reviewed teardowns from iFixit and similar outlets also bolster this pillar.

Software

Does software block the repair even when the hardware swap succeeds? We log parts pairing, calibration requirements, factory-only service utilities and whether those tools are shared with independents.

What each band means

Scores range from 0 (essentially disposable) to 10 (repair-first design). The bands below translate that scale into everyday expectations.

9+

Excellent — Built to be serviced

Standard fasteners, modular layout, official parts and guides available to everyone. Examples: Fairphone 5, Framework Laptop.

6–8.9

Good — Repairable with effort

Skilled owners or shops can keep the device running, though some parts may be pricey and software pairing can add friction. Examples: Samsung Galaxy S24, Google Pixel 8.

4–5.9

Fair — Repair is uphill

Heavy adhesive, elusive components or punitive calibration flows dominate. Repairs usually need speciality tools or micro-soldering benches. Examples: Apple AirPods Pro, many sealed earbuds.

0–3.9

Poor — Effectively disposable

Glued-solid shells, no spare‑parts path, mute documentation and heavy software locks make repair impractical outside a factory rework line.

The most cited indie repair lab bar none. Structured teardown galleries inform our openness scores whenever iFixit has covered that SKU.

OEM documentation

Firmware-independent service manuals, OEM repair portals (Apple Self Service Repair, Samsung Repair Mode and similar programmes) define what parts and tooling are truly obtainable.

EU Ecodesign & Right to Repair

EU ecodesign requirements set minimum timelines for spare parts availability; where compliance data exists we reflect it alongside our qualitative notes.

Community reconnaissance

iFixit forums, Reddit r/mobilerepair threads and speciality YouTube benches surface edge cases—especially software locks—that rarely appear in slick launch videos.

Pull OEM specs, service manuals, first-party repair videos plus professional bench reports before scoring.

Per-pillar grading

Each pillar receives its own 0–10 snapshot following the qualitative rubrics above.

Weighted composite

The headline score is the weighted blend: openness 30%, parts 30%, documentation 20%, software 20%.

Review cadence

We revisit published scores when makers ship new firmware, expand official repair programmes or unlock spare parts.
